About Chesapeake Public Schools

Chesapeake, founded in 1963, is the result of a merger of historic Norfolk County and the city of South Norfolk. Three aldermen were elected in Norfolk County in 1798 to carry out the provisions of a Thomas Jefferson educational bill, and the first superintendent of schools, Reverend Thomas Hume, was appointed in 1850.

Requirements for Kindergarten enrollment

  • You must be a current resident in Chesapeake. Use their School Zone Lookup Tool to verify the school zoned for your home address.
  • Your child must be 5 years old on or before September 30 of their kindergarten year.

Does Chesapeake Public Schools Offer Online Learning Opportunity To Students?

Chesapeake Public Schools provides a wide range of fully online courses to all students enrolled in the school division. Online learning supports their strategic goals of empowering teachers to connect with students across the division and increasing student engagement and choice. Beginning in the fall of 2025, the division provided blended and fully online learning opportunities to all students through the Schoology Learning Management System (LMS). This LMS will assist teachers in providing students with personalized learning experiences.

Their online learning opportunity affords students flexibility while providing instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. Online courses require students to work independently, demonstrate excellent time management skills, and be motivated to succeed.

Students may take advantage of online courses for initial credit through Chesapeake Virtual Academy or Virtual Virginia.
